Before Palm Coast: Early Settlements and Natural Abundance

Palm Coast as we know it began in the late 1960s, when ITT Corporation, an international conglomerate, envisioned transforming the area into a master-planned community. In 1969, ITT acquired over 68,000 acres of land, carefully designing a city with a focus on modern infrastructure and an eco-conscious approach.

Palm Coast’s master plan incorporated canals, golf courses, parks, and residential neighborhoods, all with easy access to natural landscapes. The city’s first residential lot sales began in the 1970s, attracting retirees, young families, and vacationers drawn to Florida’s sunny allure.

Becoming a City

Palm Coast remained an unincorporated area of Flagler County for decades, but as the population grew, so did the need for local governance. In 1999, residents voted to incorporate Palm Coast as a city, officially establishing it on December 31 of that year. At the time of incorporation, Palm Coast had a population of about 30,000.

Today, the city’s population has grown to over 90,000, making it one of the fastest-growing cities in Florida. Its expansion has been carefully balanced with its founding principles of sustainability and connection to nature, preserving the area's lush greenery and waterways.
